Driftlog › Compare travel trackers › US states apps
Most apps for the states you've visited are maps you tick by hand: USA Travel: I've Been in US, USA States - Map Tracker, States Visited USA, been, Trāce and US States Visited. They are quick if you remember every state. If you would rather not remember, the other kind of app fills the map in from where your phone has been and from the location saved in your photos.
Where I stand. I make Driftlog, one of the apps on this page, so weigh what follows accordingly. I have tried to say where the other apps are the better choice. Driftlog does not do counties or national parks, and two of the apps below do.

The table scrolls sideways on a phone.
A map you tick by hand needs no permissions at all, which is a real advantage. It also works for trips from years ago that left no photos.
| App | Where the map comes from | Listed price (US App Store) | US rating (ratings) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driftlog (mine) | Recorded in the background as you travel, plus earlier trips from the location in your photos. States, towns and cities, with dates | Free to download. Driftlog Premium $6.99, once | 5.0 (1) |
None of the state trackers above fill themselves in. Driftlog is built the other way round: you grant Always location and access to your photos, and it does the remembering.
There is no official rule, so pick one and keep to it. The common ones: you count a state if you slept there, if you set foot outside an airport, or if you stopped there at all. Many people do not count changing planes. A map you tick by hand follows whatever rule you choose. Driftlog colors a state when it has recorded you in a town there, from your location or from a photo taken there, so a state you only flew over does not count.
If you remember where you have been, a map you tick by hand is quickest. USA Travel: I've Been in US has the most ratings of the state-only apps (4.8 (2,242)) and adds counties and national parks. If you want the map kept up to date without tapping, Driftlog fills in states and the towns in them by itself.
Yes. Driftlog records where you are in the background and colors in the state, with the towns and dates, and it rebuilds earlier trips from the location saved in your photos. It needs Always location permission. The other state trackers on this page are filled in by hand.
US States Visited and Trāce list no in-app purchases on the US App Store. USA Travel: I've Been in US is free, with county maps at $0.99 each. Driftlog is free to download: for new users the first three states (and the first foreign country) open in full, and every other state still fills in on the map and in the count.
Trāce says its states map includes Washington, D.C. Driftlog's US map has 51 areas, the 50 states and D.C., and counts against that. The other apps on this page describe 50 states.
USA Travel: I've Been in US sells county maps for single states at $0.99 each and lets you mark national parks. USA States - Map Tracker tracks national parks. Driftlog does neither: it records states, towns and cities.
How this page was made. I make Driftlog, one of the apps on this page. Prices and ratings were read from each app's own US App Store page on 22 October 2026, and what each app does is what its store page says. I have not tested every app here. What I say about Driftlog is checked against its source code. If something here is out of date, the store page is the one to trust.
